I wanted something a little decadent this Sunday morning, do I decided to try a modern version of the ancient chocolate and corn beverage favored by Aztec royalty.

Mine came out as more of a sweetened pudding or breakfast cereal, but boy oh boy it hit the spot for my degenerate northern tastebuds! I want to try non sweet and spicier variations on this too, but this was a great starter experiment!


Decadent Chocolate Grits (Gluten free!)

1/4 cup 5 minute quick grits

1 cup milk

1/4 tablet Mexican hot chocolate drink mix (nestles 'Abuelita' is a common brand.)


Dash of salt

Optional: dash of cinnamon, dash of hot pepper

In a thick bottomed pan bring all to a simmer, stirring constantly to prevent lumps and scorching. Simmer 2-3 minutes until thick and creamy.


Serve warm. Top with butter if desired
